While searching for an article to share about creative women, I found that very few were written. There were articles about creative women art directors, creative business women or women that were in a particular industry but not just about women themselves. Women, by nature, are creative. We were created to create. Even if a woman does not bear a child, or even become a mother (and by no means do I think that is the sole purpose of any woman) there is an aspect to our blueprint that needs to express some kind of creativity. When this is denied or restricted a person can suffer. We tend to restrict ourselves for fear of what people might think if we REALLY expressed our self. Expression is fundamental to creativity – as long as we are expressing our own thought and feelings and not someone else’s. It is the uniqueness of how we feel and the way we perceive what is around us that makes up our individual creativeness. A definition in the dictionary of the word “create” means “to evolve from one’s own thought or imagination”. We are all creative in our everyday life just by the thoughts that we think, that we come up with ourselves.
People have a tendency to only think of creativity when it comes to the Arts. I have a dear friend who likes to clean. She cleans other people’s homes for some extra money, as well as her own. Her creativity is used to make that home sparkling clean. She describes the feeling that she gets afterwards as similar to what I must feel when I finish a painting. I also know women who like to cook and create new delicious meals expanding on or not using a recipe at all. Many of my friends are teachers who are constantly thinking of creative ways to reach their students. Even business women who would say “I’m not creative” are using their own unique thoughts to accomplish a task. I also have another dear friend who is a great artist. We became friends when I took her portrait class. The women in the class would readily admit they were “creative”, yet often they had the same issues of low self worth, getting their lives together, or family, money, relationships, etc. Perhaps we shouldn’t limit our creative thoughts to just certain areas and apply it to all aspects of our lives. Imagine the opportunities we might find if we did.
In truth every person uses their creativity in some form or another. The more we recognize our unique ability to create both our thoughts and our lives, the richer our life will become.
